I have been keeping on going with this 3-D stuff and learning about the Platonic solids... Plato discovered them. He was a mathematician from Ancient Greece. They are special shapes for all kinds of HUGE maths reasons which I am just starting to get. My favourite is the DODECAHEDRON which is made of 12 pentagons and forms a ball. The old mathematicians thought it was so special that it needed to be kept secret because it stood for the way the universe was organised. LOL. The other solids were the elements of earth fire water and air. The earth was the cube. Here is a picture of the solids that i made from shapes. We borrowed the magnets from kindy. Thanks little people.
We have been drawing everyday and doing tutorials with Mark Kistler online. I have made some really awesome 3-d drawings. The thing about trying to make your drawing look 3-d is lots and lots and lots of shading and foreshortening. Cubes are easier than spheres!!! But you can make all the practice shapes into cartoons. We bought his book and here is a link to his website if you want to try his free lessons.

I am reading and writing and watching about heroes. I have decided there are 4 kinds:
1. superhero: someone with super abilities, not human or transforms themselves to do great things like Green Lantern
2. hero: regular person with special abilities, like Indianan Jones and Theo Wallcott
3. unlikely hero: someone who doesn't look like a hero, might be small or skinny or nerdy, but does great things and surprises people and themselves like Hiccup the Viking
4. reluctant hero: someone who does great things but doesn't really want to like Frodo Baggins from Lord of the Rings
Mom would also like to say that there are lots of female heroes too like Lara Croft.
Who are your heroes?

I love that I can come to your site and learn something new! Dodecahedron...I really like the sound of that word. Do you like the sound of some words? I even like how some feel when you say them, like "gaberdine" or "mukluk".
ReplyDeleteDodecahedrons also reminded me that there is still a toy that I want to get called a Hoberman's sphere. Have you seen them? It's a sphere that can expand and contract. I would like to get one and study it for a while.
Thanks for posting!
